Genuine Craftsmanship from Italy: Candles that Touch Your Heart

With Dedication to the Product, a Love of Detail - and a Passion for Embellishment

Even after decades of experience, we come across innovative ideas and applications with our KURZ embellishment products that never cease to amaze us - and inspire us. Downright impressive. When, in addition to so much dedication to a product and impressive craftsmanship, there is also such an appreciation of our surface embellishment solutions, then we want to share this with the world.

What is it all about? Impressive works of art and candles made with so much love that we have rarely seen. And who is behind them? A whole family history: Cereria Pernici.

„I love these decorated candles; they have developed and grown over time with me”, says Evelina Pernici, president of Cereria Pernici.

Pernici

For 130 years Cereria Pernici has been making candles. Each product is truly unique and born from a story, still today, all familiar.

The Goal

Tradition, innovation and respect for the environment are the firm values on which the company has built its history since 1892. Each candle is handmade and produced with a long working process. All collections have always stood out for their great refinement as far as both design and type of decorations and their application are concerned. Additionally, there is a tailor-made approach with which they treat every single item in their collections. From the original idea to realization, at each stage care is taken with the smallest details, not to mention the packaging.

With sheets of metallized wax, airy, graphic fairy-tale shapes and forms are being created. The skillful hands of experienced crafts people then have the task of wrapping the candles, one by one, with these magic sheets: The Pernici avvolto (wrapped candle). But this soon raised the question: How could the finishing be done more easily?

The Solution

Originally, the wax sheets with KURZ transfer decorations were made entirely by hand. The transition to the machine, which automatically produced 1 mm thick wax sheets, was a significant achievement, accomplished in 2004 by the Polytechnic University of Milan after almost two years of trials. The metallized wax sheet was created by uniformly transferring the wafer-thin transfer layer onto the thin wax layer. Filigree patterns are created on the glossy wax plates by screen printing and layering different colors with the printing frames.

How Are the Creative and New Decors Created?

The search for a theme, the development of the design, the combination of colors - it all starts on the computer. If the result is good, the printing frames and colors are prepared. This is followed by color testing of various metallic effects, and finally the chosen shape is realized with a stencil. It is then either hand-colored or wrapped with the laser-cut wax sheets in the in-house Pernici workshop.

Thanks to Signora Pernicis's creative flair and innovative spirit, KURZ finishes such as LUXOR® 302 and LUXOR® MTS 232 Gold can be found on candle art today. This is how a candle series of its own came about: NIGHT FLIGHT. On average, four to five new designs are developed each year – some for Christmas and others for year-round use. The latest metallic colors and effects are always incorporated into the design.

Why KURZ?

“About 40 years ago when I first met KURZ through LUXORO, browsing through the metallic and matte color palettes was love at first sight, seeing the various shades of colors thrilled me. I immediately wondered how I could put them on our candles.”

Says Evelina Pernici.

We feel the same: We are so grateful for the appreciation of our product too, and the wonderful story, passion and craftsmanship behind it. And to see our products being used in such a special way.
